Power; Shadow Control
Personality; Hoo boy. Sit down for a moment folks, because this shit is going to take some explaining. Zephyr is a very unique character, both in and out of universe. He's not the kind of person you'd expect to be the hero of his own story, let alone the kind of guy who's really attached to his little group. But there's a lot of happenstance here that made Zephyr who is he, both for the good and for the bad. Zephyr is a deeply troubled boy, he's withdrawn and cold and cares very little for anyone that doesn't tickle his fancy or tries to tell him how he should live. He's shut off, minimalistic, and filled with guilt and self hatred that he turns around into malicious intent for the people he fights. He's very much a self-destructive kid, one with precious little to live for. But that precious little is more than enough. It gives him faint glimmers of hope, attacks of courage and compassion, and a drive to protect just as much as he has to destroy. To put it very plainly, Zephyr's broken. And while on one hand he seems to be piecing himself back together, on the other he seems content to let himself just fall to pieces.
Zephyr grew up in an orphanage called the Cranktown Seminary, a place for lost boys and girls to find care and comfort in the Lord. Zephyr was never a part of this, only coasting by in the place and never praying or participating in the on goings. He felt alone here, as if there was no one around but him and him alone. The adults of this place showed him little to no compassion, a counterpoint to the one little girl that did, and bred bitterness inside of the boy. One day, thanks to ongoing experiments by one of the game's primary antagonists, Zephyr snapped and went insane. He massacred the entire orphanage, killing every adult and every child and literally tearing it apart, ranting about God and about life and death. He never truly recovered. Zephyr has always been teetering on the edge of sanity, doing things without thinking and developing a bloodlust and a hunger for power in battle. He revels in slaughter and treats his enemies as little more than things to be crushed, killed and discarded. Because of the tragedy at the seminary, Zephyr can get very cold and distant, locking himself away from his friends. He feels incredible guilt for what has happened, to the point where he believes he should be dead. In his own way, he actively seeks to die, and grows furious when people that he feels are like him are survived by Zenith (God).
However, he was spared by the very God he sinned against, and was taken in by a retired soldier named Vashyron. And it was here that Zephyr began to find a place for himself. He took on some better, though not positive, traits. Like Vashyron, he adopted something of a jocular side, cracking jokes in and around the home base and during battle (even when he's gotten quite bloodthirsty). He also started to take on some of Vashyron's ethics. This isn't a good thing. They watch softcore porn together (as seen in the opening of Chapter 2) and Zephyr has developed an eye for things decidedly fan service. With work as well, as while Zephyr seems geared to take up jobs just like Vashyron, he's none too concerned with wasted human (or otherwise) life in the process.
It wasn't until the day he saved Leanne that he really began to take on truly good qualities, starting from the very first meeting. He recklessly threw himself into harm's way to save Leanne, catching her as she fell. He comforted her, or tried to at least, as they fell. Ever since, Zephyr more and more has begun living for her. Whenever Leanne is in danger, Zephyr immediately jumps to her rescue or to her defense (often times getting slapped because he misread the situation). On several accounts he admits that he wants to make Leanne happy. When she was sick, Zephyr was the one that pushed for Vashyron and himself to go and get her cold medicine, wanting to take care of her. She brings out the very best in him, and since he doesn't understand how to make it all work, he responds recklessly and on instinct. Sometimes this works, sometimes her and Vashyron need to drop him on his head and yell at him. From their late game interactions, it seems likely that he views her as a surrogate sister (as he had unknowingly killed his own during the Seminary massacre). Unfortunately, Leanne also fuels his death seeking tendencies, as all he wants to do is make her happy. And then he can die.
In many ways, he is an absolute statement in the cruelty of mercy, whether it be by human or by divine. And never is it more clear than when he shows he has none to spare. Zephyr will kill, without hesitation and without regret. At his very worst, he holds a very nihilistic outlook on his own actions, and has embraced his own damnation. Wanting Leanne to be happy isn't an act of atonement, it is his only truly selfless want. He doesn't care for his soul and he sure as hell doesn't care for salvation. He feels guilt about what he has done, he feels regret, but he also feels strongly that there is no place for something like him, and that he has no right to look for redemption. To Zephyr, life does not have a happy ending, even if it does appear to be something not entirely unlike a happy life for the time being.
Zephyr is a mess of good and bad, but this much is certain. He's no longer alone. He knows he has friends. Sometimes this shows in good ways, such as in his drive to get Leanne medicine while she was sick. Sometimes this shows negatively, like his reckless urge to kill and slaughter anyone that even threatens Leanne. He can be cold and indifferent just like he can joke and be borderline social. He has no qualms about killing, and in fact, can revel in it if there battle is large enough. He has no care for God, and in fact rages against him when he protects the people that should die, like himself. And he looks for the day that he can die for real. Whether he wishes to be whole again, or is content with just staying together long enough to see one person happy, he has not yet decided. But one thing is for sure. Zephyr ain't quitting until she is.
